Welcome
  • Who we are

Second Year Council was formed in the mid-nineties after students saw the need for increased unity among second years. Today, SYC continues to bring the class together through unique events that promote diversity and inclusion.

  • What we do

We develop, foster, and maintain a sense of community, loyalty, and responsibility among students toward their Class, the University, and the Alumni Association.

Scavenger Hunt

Next weekend the Social and Entertainment Committee will be kicking off our Second Year Scavenger Hunt! This fun weekend-long competition will run from 4pm Friday, 11/7 to 4pm Sunday, 11/9. You have 48 hours to earn as many points as possible based on a list of items as well as impromptu events throughout the weekend. The top three teams will receive prizes at the Closing Ceremony on Sunday at 4. Our Community Service Committee will also be giving a prize to the team that earns the most service-oriented points during the hunt (denoted by asterisks on the official list). Whether it’s the prizes or just the thought of having fun with your friends that motivates you, click on the Cav Scav page under Events at the top of the page to sign up!
Happy Hunting!

Outreach Update

Our next upcoming event is the Transfer Taste of Charlottesville, which is happening on Wednesday, October 1st. We have six big-name C-Ville caterers coming in to help us give our new classmates a gastronomic tour of the city, as well as provide them with an opportunity to spend time in a garden, socialize with each other, and purchase class merchandise. We also have the New Dominions coming to sing for us halfway through the event.

Another event we have coming up is this Friday, October 3rd on the Lawn at 3:00 PM. We’re partnering with the Society for Awakened Souls to sponsor an event called Hugs for Hannah, a support event meant to bring students together who may be struggling during this difficult time at the university. Students are encouraged to come out and join SAS and SYC for an afternoon of hugs, discussion, and writing thank-you notes to officers and volunteers who have so earnestly dedicated themselves to the search for our classmate and friend, Hannah Graham.

Also, we have the Copa Carnival coming up on October 17th in the Amphitheater to celebrate the end of Hispanic Heritage month (previously scheduled for a date back in September). We’ll be partnering with the Latino Student Association (LSA) for carnival games, free food, and a great opportunity to participate in this cultural celebration.
